The Project

Recently someone that I know began a new podcast. He commented to me that he wished that the podcast had a landing page of sorts so people could easily be redirected from their social media page (primarily Instagram and Facebook) to the various platforms where the podcast is hosted (IE Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.).

The project was simple enough and I told him that I could quickly get him a simple landing page. He took me up on the offer, and overnight he had an initial design and within a week the final version was up on the internet.

The Design

Because it was a relatively simple landing page they wanted, the design didn't require a huge amount of work. They also had a sample of what they had in mind. So, based off of that sample and the functionality they wanted, I created the initial template. The initial template had a hero image of the podcast logo and name. Underneath was a picture of the two hosts and a short description of the podcast. Finally at the bottom there were several buttons that go to the various places where people can listen to the podcast itself.

The Process

The process of making the site was also relatively straightforward. From the initial consultation the first draft of the site came out very quickly. The process was slightly slowed down because the client lives in South Korea (I live in Texas), so the time difference is quite significant since I may complete a draft or changes in the morning/afternoon here, but would have to wait until night to communicate with them.

There were only a couple design changes they requested. They had two colors they used with their podcast that they wanted included, so the background became a gradient of those two colors. During that time they also created a new logo for the podcast, so that was updated as well. The only other thing to do was ensure that the page was responsive as South Koreans primarily use their phone for internet usage so it needed to be visually decent looking on both mobile and larger screens.

The Stack

Since this was a simple landing page with no data involved, it was created purely with HTML and CSS. In the future updates may be made to increase the amount of content and functionality. The client already had purchased a domain name through GoDaddy, but since GoDaddy is quite expensive for hosting, I had the site hosted through Netlify. The DNS was then changed so the purchased domain would also work with the host.

Reflections

I don't have a lot to say looking back on this project - just because it was a relatively simple and straightforward project. Overall I think the resulting page is good and sufficient for what they wanted. I think there is a lot of room for growth with the page if the podcast continues on and grows. An email list for people who want regular updates on things happening, more detailed info for some of the regular corners in the podcast, and so on. But, that's for another time.
